Can't disable desktop icon label shadows with AMM on in Windows 7

I don't like the drop shadows on the label text for desktop icons in Windows 7, so I have that effect disabled. However, as soon I start up AMM, it puts the shadows back on the icons. I can't turn them off again because that requires restarting or logging out, after which I'd have to turn on AMM (and the shadows) again. Is there a way to get AMM to cooperate with this visual effect setting?
