 Hi guys,

I've read some info concerning Actual Window Manager 5.5 beta which was talking about the portable feature but it did'nt look clear to me...

Does AWM support the portable feature now?

If not, is there a way to make it work from an USB Drive without being installed?
* The usb drive might not be removed every day.
* I might be able to start it every morning.

In short - no, AWM currently is not portable. However, we are proceeding on this way and in the future will surely release the separate portable version (or make the current version portable).

Yes, AWM can be run from an USB drive without being installed. However, there are some things to consider when you run AWM on a clean system (i.e. where it wasn't installed in usual way):
  • It will create some entries in the Registry (
    Code
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Actual Tools\Actual Window Manager]
    and
    Code
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Actual Tools\Actual Window Manager]
    branches).
  • It will appear unregistered. If you register it on that system, the registration information will also be stored in the Registry.
  • It will create the folder
    Code
    "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Actual Window Manager"
    and copy there all settings files from the folder which it was launched from.
  • It will leave a copy of
    Code
    aimemb.dll
    in the
    Code
    "%Temp%"
    folder.
  • If you use the Console Windows Support then you will not be able to safely remove the USB drive until logging off or (in worst case) rebooting the PC because the
    Code
    ConsoleHelper.dll
    file will be locked on the drive.
