I'm happy to report that thanks to Martyn's efforts we have succeeded in hunting this bug down and fixing it. The fix is available in the just release beta 3 - please check it out and confirm the fix. Thanks a lot!

Alex,

Bad news I'm afraid.  I've been running b3 for 40 minutes and the icons in the notification area have now started to flash on monitors 2 and 3.

I launched task manager and when it is on monitor 2 the icon in the monitor 2 task bar is blank.  If I move the window to monitor 1 the correct icon displays on monitor 1 task bar.  The icons on monitors 2 and 3 task bars which were OK before the notification area started to flash are still OK.

Task manager figures for AWM are:

Handles 200
User object 3385 and 3369 alternating every second
GDI objects 9946 and 9995 alternating

Let me know if you want me to run any more diagnostics

Wow, sad to hear that! :( I was sure that we had fixed that leak. It looks like we should start from the beginning...

Martyn, do you have the "Preview Thumbnails" option enabled or not?

Alex,

Windows Thumbnails is not enabled.

It is now 2 hours 17 mins and the flashing notification area icons have stopped flashing - they have disappeaered completely.  They are still there but invisible - if I mouse over them I get the relevant pop-ups.

Martyn,

Thanks for the quick reply. What Multi-monitor Taskbar options do you have enabled? Do you use Virtual Desktops?

Alex,

I've just noticed a couple of things which may be relevant.

When I move the AWN window to monitor 2 the task bar icon on monitor 2 is blank
When I move the window to monitor 3 the task bar icon is OK  (the notification area on monitor 3 is blank - like monitor 2)

On the Multiple Monitors tab of AWM it shows 3 monitors, in the order (left to right) 3, 1, 2

The right hand monitor (2 on the above display) is actually my primary monitor (which I always refer to as monitor 1).  In the control panel monitor 2 (the right hand one) is set as my main display.

Martyn,

Please specify do you have any toolbars enabled on secondary taskbars and, in case you do, also specify their names and versions of their host apps.

To further check the subject issue, please turn off all Multi-monitor Taskbar options except for the MMT itself, i.e. make secondary taskbars plain, with no additional features (like Start button, toolbars, tray/clock) and see if the issue continues to emerge or goes away.

Thank you for your help!

Alex,

No other toolbars on secondary monitors

The main monitor has truelaunchbar toolbar and Google quick search box

I have now disabled start button, notification area, task bar re-order, tray icons re-order.

I'll let you know how it goes

Alex.

The system remained stable for 1.5 hours.

Then I made one change - I checked the box for "Show the notification area"

There was a very slight increase in the number of GDI Objects shown in task mamager but is was still around 900.

After about 20 mins the notification area started to flash on monitors 2 and 3.  Task manager showed GDI objects up to 9997.
