Summary

I identified a bug in how folder rules are processed.

Folder rules are inconsistently applied to windows that meet first one criteria and then another.

System Information

Operating System - Windows XP SP2
Program Version - 4.4 Beta 2

Error Duplication

Disable all Folder Rules
01) Open Actual Window Manager.
02) Open Actual Window Manager Configuration Manager.
03) Identify and disable all rules that affect folders (the All Windows rule and any rule that would affect a window that displays the contents of a directory).

Create My Computer Folder Rule
01) Open Actual Window Manager.
02) Open Actual Window Manager Configuration Manager.
03) Click on the "Adds a new window rule to the current list" button on the toolbar.
04) Enter the following information into the new rule:
Target Window
- Name - "My Computer Folder"
- Window class - Checked - "CabinetWClass"
- Window caption - Checked - "My Computer"
--- Exact match - Checked
- Program - Checked - "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE"

Position
- Move to monitor - Unchecked
- Align window at startup to - Checked - "top-left"
- Position
--- horizontal shift - "25" - "% of current monitor"
--- vertical shift - "25" - "% of current monitor"
- Save position on exit - Unchecked
- Restrict placement - Checked
- Top-Left Corner
--- left - Checked - "25" - "% of current monitor"
--- top - Checked - "25" - "% of current monitor"
- Bottom-Right Corner
--- left - Unchecked
--- top - Unchecked
- Via title button - Checked - "top-left"
- Via window menu item - Checked

05) Click on the "Saves changes" button on the toolbar.

Create My Documents Folder Rule
01) Open Actual Window Manager.
02) Open Actual Window Manager Configuration Manager.
03) Click on the "Adds a new window rule to the current list" button on the toolbar.
04) Enter the following information into the new rule:
Target Window
- Name - "My Documents Folder"
- Window class - Checked - "CabinetWClass"
- Window caption - Checked - "My Documents"
--- Exact match - Checked
- Program - Checked - "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE"

Position
- Move to monitor - Unchecked
- Align window at startup to - Checked - "top-left"
- Position
--- horizontal shift - "50" - "% of current monitor"
--- vertical shift - "50" - "% of current monitor"
- Save position on exit - Unchecked
- Restrict placement - Checked
- Top-Left Corner
--- left - Checked - "50" - "% of current monitor"
--- top - Checked - "50" - "% of current monitor"
- Bottom-Right Corner
--- left - Unchecked
--- top - Unchecked
- Via title button - Checked - "top-left"
- Via window menu item - Checked

05) Click on the "Saves changes" button on the toolbar.

Test Rules
01) From your desktop, open the "My Computer" folder.  Note the position on the desktop.
02) On this window, use the Address combo box and manually select the "My Documents" folder.  Note that the position has changed.
03) On this window, use the Address combo box and manually select the "My Computer" folder.  Note that the position has not changed.
04) Close this window.
05) From your desktop, open the "My Documents" folder.  Note the position on the desktop.
06) On this window, use the Address combo box and manually select the "My Computer" folder.  Note that the position has changed.
07) On this window, use the Address combo box and manually select the "My Documents" folder.  Note that the position has not changed.
08) Close this window.

Error Message(s)

None

Entry(s) in the Event Viewer

None

Expected Results

01) When switching to a different folder, I would like to see the folder position not change.  This was the case in earlier versions of Actual Window Manager.
02) If the decision has been made to switch the folder position when it matches a different window rule, then make it always switch position, not just the first time.

Note(s)

None

Thanks for another professional bug report! Anyway, the described issue is not a bug but expected result: Actual Window Manager checks only the first change of caption and re-applies rule, if needed.

Such behavior was developed in 4.2 mostly for document-oriented windows (Internet browers, text editors etc.) which have some default caption at startup and then change it to that defined by the opened document; so your 01) is unacceptable.

If it would be as described in your 02) then it would mean that having several rules for different particular documents and opening another such document in the same window would change window properties - we had considered such approach non-intuitive and confusing.

We possibly were wrong but no one besides you had complained about it yet. If there are other similar reports/requests then we could reconsider that decision.

I see.  Thank you for your response.  I now understand why the program responds in this way.

I currently use your excellent program primarily to organize my folders' windows and a few choice programs.  With that in mind, would it be possible to somehow add an option to a particular window rule (or even a global option that applies to all window rules) that disables the functionality that reapplies a window rule based on the first change of the window caption?

Thank you for your time and consideration.  :)
