I thought this had been mentioned somewhere before, but maybe I am wrong, because a search did not give any results. What I really want/need is an option to export and import individual specific window settings. I am using AWM on both my desktop and laptop, and many specific window settings I need on both machines. To do this I need do to define this window setting on both machines. It would however be much easier (and a time saver, let alone one less possibility to make an error!) if after defining the specific window setting on one machine I could simply export it and then import it on the other machine. I would really LOVE such an option! The current import/export function is not good for that purpose, as this will export and import
all
settings, and thus override machine specific settings (not just windows settings).

Hello Vasiliy,
First of all: Happy New Year to everybody at Actual Tools! I hope it will be a good year for you all!
Is there any answer as to if and when this feature might me included? I know you are busy guys and I do not want to push you, but right now this feature would come in very, very handy and would save me a tremendous lot of time.
My situation is that I have restored my broken PC onto a different computer but am more than 2 years (!) behind with my individual AWM settings. If I could only export those new and changed settings from my backup laptop to the restored PC, I do not have to manually enter all individual settings. Even though I have restored my PC 4 months ago and I have already manually restored quite a few individual settings, I still have 29 new and changed settings to go
And because time is scarce I foresee it will take quite some time before my restored PC is fully up to date.
Thanks!
Best regards.

Good day gentelmen,
Pim,currently your feature is not being developed.Though, you could try using our standart import/export feature to copy all setting on 2nd PC and just turn off the unnecessary rules and settings. Otherwise,if you need to copy
only
window rules, then you should go to %AppData%\Actual Tools\Actual Window Manager folder and copy WindowRules.ini to your second PC.
If you have any other reasons for this feature at this moment, please, clarify them.
Have a nice day!
Any questions?Mail to support@actualtools.com!

Hello Alexander,
Thank you for your response. Both solutions you give start from an assumption that is not true for me, i.e. that the settings are the same on all computers. As I explained in my first post all machines also have machine specific settings. If I used either the standard export/import option or the way you described copying WindowRules.ini, that will always export/import
all
settings and thus delete any machine specific settings.
This is actually the reason for asking for an export function of individual window rules. Machines are different from each other, they are used in different places (f.i. laptop vs. desktop), have different resolutions, different software installations etc. Therefore, besides common rules on all machines, I also have specific rules for each individual machine.
As I explained in my last post I currently have a backlog in changing and adding new/changed individual window rules. To give you an indication of how much time this consumes: recently I just had to add 3 window rules from my backlog to the restored machine, because not having those rules had been frustrating me for a long while. However, because those were very detailed rules it took me around 2 hours to add them! 2 hours for just 3 window rules:!: And now I have still 26 changes to go...
If there were an option to export and import individual window rules I could have done this in less than 5 minutes! As an entrepreneur time is valuable, so this option would be very valuable to me and probably many others.
Even in the case that there is no backlog, being able to export and import individual window rules is valuable. It makes it possible that I only just once enter a new rule that is to be used on all machines and then copy it to all other machines, instead of having to enter it multiple times.
I wonder how other people are using window rules if they have more than one machine, but I can imagine that there are many more users who are in the same position as me in that they have a certain set of rules on all machines and some rules on just one machine. This option would benefit them too.
I looked whether I could copy and paste individual rules from the WindowRules.ini file, but after opening it in Notepad it seems to be impossible. However, I imagine that adding such a feature to AWM is relatively easy to implement. I am not a software developer but do have a good technical grasp, and based on that I think it should be rather easy to add (but I could be wrong
.
I would be very grateful if you added this feature. Like I said, it would be a great time saver and time is exactly what I am short of (otherwise I would already have added those 26 remaining windows rules).
Thanks for your consideration.
Best regards.

Hello Pim,
Unfortunately, we have more priority tasks at the moment. However, I could advise an workaround that may save your time. Actually you are able to copy and paste individual rules from the WindowRules.ini file. Let's consider AWM's factory settings as an example and you need to copy the "Skype" Specific Settings. You should open the WindowRules.ini file in Notepad and find "Skype". The rule is started with the
<window_rule name="Skype" type="WINDOWRULE">
opening tag and ended with the
</window_rule>
closing tag. So you need to copy the following part of the WindowRules.ini file:
<window_rule name="Skype" type="WINDOWRULE"><params><param name="IconValue">\icon={\type=inline\value=424D3604000000000000360000002800000010000

and paste it in another WindowRules.ini file after any closing tag (</window_rule>).
I hope this will be useful. Please inform if you have any questions regarding the workaround.
Best regards.

Thanks Vasiliy! That is helpful and will save me time. I have tried it and can confirm it works.
I do hope however that you will keep my feature request on your list, because exporting and importing individual window settings is even less work
Best regards.

Hello Bogdan and Vasiliy,
I have been absent for a long, long time. A lack of energy, time and health keeps me from being present as I used to and want to be. Hopefully that will change sometime (preferably soon). I'd love to be more active again. I hope you are doing well!
One of the things that currently keeps me occupied is installing a couple of new computers. I wanted to import my AWM rules as Vasiliy has explained here, but it seems that in AWM 8.9.2 this method does not work anymore. Whenever I add a rule the way it is described, the section Specific Settings is completely empty. The rule is not added, and the other rules have disappeared from the configuration window. They are still present in the WindowRules.ini file, but when I then add a rule manually, that file also changes and only includes the one rule I just added manually. I have tried this by shutting AWM down, then adding the rule to WindowRules.ini and then starting AWM again. From my previous experience in older versions this should not even be necessary, but I wanted to make sure other causes were not influencing the outcome.
Do I need to do something else or additional to Vasiliy's instructions to make this work again?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Best regards.

Hello Pim,
Please send us your configuration files (Actual Window Manager -> Tools -> Configuration -> Send to Tech Support), then copy your Specific Settings to WindowsRules.ini file and send us your configuration files again (where the Specific Settings section is empty) and specify which text editor (name, version) you use to add your Specific Settings.
Best regards.
