So, once again, an arbitrary decision with side-effects. All standard titlebar text in Windows 8 appears to be central-aligned, rather than left aligned as in Win 7 and before. Which means less than 50% of the space for title buttons, specifically on narrow windows.
Is there any chance AWM could take control over this? I found a StackOverflow thread which suggested there wasn't much hope, but you never know - worth asking

Hello David
The placement of the window caption in the title bar depends on the theme that you use.
Unfortunately we can't change the way in which the caption is placed in the exact theme.

Ah - sorry, I think I misunderstood. I thought you meant in the .theme file. But I guess it's actually in the .msstyles file, which seems much harder to edit...
