When I open timeline view (ether with clicking on timeline button on the taskbar or [WIN]+[TAB] shortcut), exploror.exe crashes if tabbed exploror opened. Without tabbed exploror, timeline view show up as expected.

I'd like to report, this is happening also on my system.
Also Win 10 1909 [x64] and Window Manager 8.14.3.

I'd like to add, that this crash only happens the first time, when I try to open the timeline. After the explorer crashed, the timeline button works as expected on my system.

Hi everybody

This is a known problem. We'll try to fix it and will post in this topic when it's fixed.

As we can see, the problem doesn't persist, if you open at least one Windows explorer window before starting Actual Window Manager (or before enabling the Tabbed Explorer feature). Once you do this the problem shouldn't appear until the restart of the system. Could you please confirm this?

Max,

Are you sure you didn't restart Actual Window Manager that time and didn't open an explorer window before starting it again?

Best regards.

Mhhh - pretty sure... The actions:
System is started, AWM starts with windows, Tabbed Explorer feature is enabled.
I've almost every time a (tabbed) explorer window open.
-> Click on the timeline button
-> (shell) explorer crashes
-> (shell) explorer is automatically restarted
-> click on timeline button
-> timeline opens
-> click (again) on timeline button
-> timeline opens.

I guess AWM is running all the time, as the tabbed explorer window stays open.

May I add, I've enabled the option to "start explorer windows in a separate process" in my configuration.

Max,

Do you mean you open a folder or several folders somewhere between the listed actions after the first crash of the Windows explorer, and then Timeline doesn't make explorer crash despite there is tabbed explorer window with open folders in it?

Best regads.

No,

I don't open any explorer windows between clicking on the timeline button.

Oh, I see - one click on the timeline button is missing between "timeline opens" and "click (again) on timeline button" - the one to close the timeline and go back to the desktop.

I did some further testing:

- timeline opens instantly here, if no tabbed explorer is open (no crash)
- the crash happens one time if a tabbed explorer window is open and I don't open more tabs (performing the actions described above)
- the crash happens reproducible if I open a new tab between clicking the timeline button

Again: The default windows setting is to open all explorer windows in the same process, I've changed the windows default settings to open each explorer window in a separate process.

Kind regards

Max,

I was able to reproduce the problem with the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" option enabled. Do I understand correctly, that in your case the "Folders" part of Windows explorer doesn't crash and tabbed explorer with open folders doesn't close when the problem happens?

Best regards.

Yes, the tabbed explorer windows stay open. Just the "shell explorer" crashes.

Is there any progress on this issue?
The crashes still happens over a year later on Windows 10 20H2 and AIM 8.14.5.
This is pretty bugging, as I've opened an explorer window almost anytime and also using the timeline feature and Windows Virtual Desktops quite often.

Hello, Max

Sorry for the delay in replying to you.

Unfortunately, for now we were unable to figure out what exactly causes the problem, so it's hard to tell when the problem will be fixed. We plan to investigate the problem closely in the near future.

Best regards.
