Following a recent AMM upgrade (5.1 or maybe 5.0.4) one of my apps no longer shows a taskbar icon when on my secondary monitor.

The app is an older text editor called MetaPad.

If I drag its window to my primary desktop the primary taskbar shows the icon. If I drag the window back to the secondary desktop the secondary taskbar shows a blank icon/button for the app.

This was not a problem in earlier 5.0.x versions. So far no other app shows this problem.

Thanks,

John

Hello J W

What OS are you running (version, 32 or 64 bit)?

What version of Meta Pad are you running?

I was unable to reproduce the issue on Windows 7 x64  with the latest MetaPad 3.6.

Best regards.

Thanks for the quick reply.

OS is Win7 Pro SP1 x64.

MetaPad is 3.6, dated 2011-05-23.

If there was an easy way to attach an image here I could show you a snip of the taskbar, but it's as I describe: a standard taskbar button (my settings are "Always combine, hide labels") but with no icon identifying the app.

Thanks.

See the screenshot.

What theme are you running? Have you the MetaPad icon on your desktop or pinned to one of the taskbars?

Best

Thanks. I tried the "Load image for this message" but it didn't add anything to the "View" preview. I'll try again now. (The PNG still doesn't show in the preview -- maybe when I click Reply?)

I'm using the an Aero theme with custom background, color and sounds. But switching to the standard Windows 7 Aero theme gives the same results.

I'm launching MetaPad from the QuickLaunch toolbar (retro, I know). But pinning MetaPad to the Taskbar gives consistent results:
  • Pin to the primary taskbar gives the MetaPad icon
  • Pin to the secondary taskbar gives an empty icon (which appears invisible when the app isn't running -- you can only tell it's there by pinning other apps to each side)

Thanks.

Hello J W

What does the jumplist for the empty Metapad taskbar icon show? Are the jumplists for this app on the primary and on the secondary the same?

What is the installation folder for Metapad, where is the .exe file placed?

Have you tried to pin Metapad both to the system taskbar and to the AMM taskbar at the same time?

Best regards.

The MetaPad JumpList shows the same list of files on both the primary and secondary taskbars. It is currently pinned to both the primary/system and secondary/AMM taskbars.

(However, I just noticed that the JumpLists don't behave the same on both taskbars. The context menu for an item on the primary/system JumpList has the expected JumpList items, e.g., Pin to this list, Remove from this list. But the secondary/AMM JumpList context menu is different: it is missing the JumpList items, and has Create Shortcut and Delete. But this applies to all JumpLists on the secondary/AMM taskbar, not just MetaPad. Shouldn't a secondary/AMM JumpList work the same as a Windows JumpList?)

MetaPad is installed locally, in a non-standard location:
 C:\WinUtils\MetaPad\MetaPad.exe
(I use C:\WinUtils for many small programs that don't require installation.)
But there are other small programs that run from C:\WinUtils that don't have this issue.

I just checked and found that the icon path for my MetaPad QuickLaunch shortcut was "%SystemDrive%\WinUtils\MetaPad\MetaPad.exe" but I changed the "%SystemDrive%" to "C:" and the problem remains.

Thanks,

John

Hello J W

Does the AMM jumplist show the MetaPad icon (see the screenshot)?

Please do the following:
- unpin MetaPad from AMM taskbar
- launch MetaPad, move it to the Secondary. Does the icon for MetaPad shoe up on the button?
- pin MetaPad to the Secondary taskbar
- close MetaPad, does the pinned button show the icon?

Best regards.

Hello Bogdan,

No, no icon on the JumpList window (see image below) before the steps you requested, and none after either.

I tried a couple more tests:
- run MetaPad.exe 3.6 from another folder -- icon appears on AMM taskbar as it should
- run copy of MetaPad.exe (mpad.exe) from MetaPad folder -- icon appears on AMM taskbar as it should

Thanks.

Hello J W

Could you make couple screenshots:
- pin MetaPad to the secondary taskbar, close the window
- bring the jumplist, right-click on the metapad item, select properties
- make screenshots of the Shortcut tab, General tab and Security>Advanced window.

Repeat this procedure both for transparent icon and for the normally working icon.

Send the screenshots to us manually to support@actualtools.com.

Best regards.
