Topic: «Keep Aspect Ratio doesn't work when moving to another monitor » on forum: Technical Support   Views: 3887

 I'm working with two monitors most of the time; left 1050x1680 and right 1680x1050 (they are, in fact, identical monitors with the left one in portrait orientation). When using the "Move to Monitor" title button, I expect the window to resize if necessary to fit the other monitor but to maintain its aspect ratio. What I get is that windows are tall and skinny on the left monitor and short and wide on the right monitor. (This doesn't happen if I drag windows between the monitors, but I can do that without AWM.)

The relevant settings I could find have been set as follows:
  • Window Settings/Default Settings/Size/Options = "Keep aspect ratio" (this is the same for all "Specific Settings", too.
  • Options/Windows Layout:
    "Keep layout automatically" is checked (since I frequently undock the laptop, so have to work on the one small monitor)
    "Resize along with desktop" is unchecked (I had it checked, but I thought it might be the source of my problem; apparently not)
  • Options/Actions/Resize/Common Resizing Options: "Keep window within the desktop boundaries after resizing" is checked. (So are the other two, but they don't seem relevant here.)

Is this a bug, am I expecting the wrong thing, or have I missed a setting?

 Hello Scott.

The "Keep aspect ratio" option in your case works as it should - the values of the width and height of the window are calculated separately and proportionally to the values of the monitor resolution.

Unfortunately, for now there is no way to make windows fit a monitor and keep the ratio of it's width and height at the same time or to keep either width or height proportionally to the monitor's one and keep the window's proportion at the same time.

But we'll think over implementation of these features.

 Scott,

Did you try to change the Keep aspect ratio option to something else in this set of options? Possibly, the Fit target monitor option will better suit your needs.

 Bogdan, I see that I misunderstood the "Keep aspect ratio" option. I thought it meant to keep the window's aspect ratio, not the ratio relative to the monitor. I appreciate that you're considering implementing something that will do what I want. In the meantime, perhaps the help could be updated to clarify what "Keep aspect ratio" means in this case.

Alex, I have actually switched to the "Fit target monitor" option. It is closer to what I want, but still isn't quite right, since it will resize just one dimension if needed, thus messing with the window aspect ratio. I know it seems picky, but I like certain windows (such as Explorer, dialog, and chat windows) to have certain shapes and the changes bother me. For those particular applications, I'm going with "Leave as is" for now, but it's a bit of a pain making sure that these windows are never too large in one dimension or the other for the monitor they are moving to.
