I'm using AWM 4.1 on WinXP Pro SP2. Usually, when I add a new rule, then save changes, AWM is no longer active. By this, I mean that it no longer appears in title bars or system menus.
I always have to make some other "change" (I usually click the "sort descending" and then "sort ascending" buttons), and then click "Save changes" again. Then, AWM becomes active again.
This didn't happen until I had over 50 rules or so. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Scott, thanks for the notification. We are currently working on the improvement of AWM internal low-level efficiency and planning to fix this and some related issues.

Scott, the mentioned issue seems to be fixed in the 4.3 release version. Please check it and report here about results. Thank you.
