I have made a specific setting for MailWasherPro 2012. In this specific setting the only difference with the default settings is that under Closing > Options I have selected Prevent window's accidental close > confirm close. When I start MailWasherPro there is at first no taskbar button for it. There is a tray icon, but there should also be a taskbar button when the program is open. After minimizing MailWasherPro and then opening it again by double clicking the tray icon, then the taskbar button does show. If I have no specific setting the taskbar button immediately shows when starting MailWasher, as it should.

I have observed this with MailWasherPro 2012 1.11.0 on my laptop with Vista Ultimate 32-bit and AWM 7.1 beta 2 and on my desktop with Vista Ultimate 64-bit and AWM 7.0.

P.S. Hopefully (possibly?) this issue is related to the issue mentioned here and you will be able to solve that issue too, now that losing a taskbar button can be reproduced with MailWasherPro.

Hello Pim.

I didn't have ability to test this situation with Vista. But i've tried to reproduce the problem in Windows 7.

I was unable to reproduce it, but now i have a question. Does your specific setting for MailWasher work? Because MailWasher doesn't have the standart title bar by itself, and i had to add title bar using AWM to get the "confirm close" option working.

Yes it does, in MailWasher under Settings > Display > General > I have unchecked "Enable custom window border" and then AWM works normally. I have made this setting so long ago that I did not think of it when writing the post  :oops:  My apologies!

Is there anything I can do to help you reproduce the problem? It is apparently not an incident, as it happens on 2 different computers with 2 different AWM versions.

Hello Bogdan,

I did some more testing in both a Vista Ultimate x64 and a Windows 7 Ultimate virtual machine. I have discovered that in a fresh install of AWM 7.1 beta 2 on these virtual machines the issue described does not occur. In that scenario I make a specific setting as described in my first post, and that specific setting is the only one I have made. However, if I import the settings fr om either of my current physical installations, then the issue also occurs in both virtual machines. Even if I deactivate the MailWasher setting in the imported settings and make a new setting for MailWasher, it happens again. What is strange is that, as described above, the only difference with the default setting (in which there is no issue) is that under Closing > Options I have sel ected Prevent window's accidental close > confirm close.

The question is then: why does it work starting with a fresh AWM install and not with my imported settings? I have even tried to switch off all other specific setting as well as the default settings and all exclusions to see whether the issue persists or not, and unfortunately it does. So somewh ere in my settings there is something that makes the issue with MailWasher happen. But I have no clue as to what that might be. I will send you my configuration files by e-mail.

Be aware that in order to test it properly that in MailWasher you uncheck "Enable custom window border" as described in my previous post. Also, under Settings > General > Application Settings I have unchecked "Minimise MailWasher when X clicked".

Moreover, when testing, in the Target Window definition of the specific setting you may want to uncheck Program, in order to avoid that AWM does not recognize MailWasher's window properly because the filepath is different fr om the specific setting due to the difference between a 32-bit and a 64-bit OS (Program Files vs. Program Files (x86) folder, but of course you already know that ;)

I hope that this helps you in reproducing and then fixing the issue.

Thanks for the new info.

We'll surely try to reproduce it, but for now we have some problems with launching MailWasher 2012 on any of our Vistas.

BTW: the issue also occurs on Windows 7, so you could test it on a Win7 machine as well. (> please do not read this like I am in a hurry and want an answer fast. I just say it because it may make it easier for you :)

Hello Pim.

As i've stated before, i can't reproduce the issue with Wndows 7, even now, with your configs. This fact questions the necessity of reproducing the issue in Vista.

Hello Pim.

I've got good news. The problem has been confirmed. It seems to be associated with the "move to monitor" option enabled.

As solution try to check the "Compatibility mode" checkbox of the "Block premature appearance of window" option  (on the "Startup" tab of the MailWasher specific rule).

Thank you for looking into this issue and solving it. Your solution works!

I do however have a few questions, in order to comprehend AWM's functioning better, particularly of the compatibility mode, and also in order to be able to resolve possible similar issues in the future myself.

1. I assume the issue is related to MailWasher and it is not a bug in AWM. Is that correct?
2. What exactly does the compatibility mode do and in what way is it different from unchecking "Block premature appearance of window"? The help text only says when I should try it, but not what it does.
3. Do you have any guidance as to when I should use the compatibility mode again in the future? > Are my thoughts correct that whenever there is a visibility issue with either the window itself or its taskbar button I should try the compatibility mode (or uncheck "Block premature appearance of window"?

Hello Pim.

About your questions:

1. This issue is rather associated with some incompatibility between the window of MailWasher and the way our program processes it. Don't know what exactly causes it, but MailWasher window has some singularity and can't be processed properly in a standard way.

2. These options (Block premature appearance of window and Compatibility mode) in other words are two different approaches to show only the final result of processing of a window by our program to the user.
With the "Block premature appearance" our program intercepts attempts of the processing window to open until all actions are applied.
With the "Compatibility mode" our program let the window be opened in a standard way but makes it invisible (also until all actions are applied).

3. Yeah, you're right :)
