It means, if you set ^a.+b$ as a search criterion, then program will select the windows, those have "a" at the beginning and "b" at the end of the window caption.

I think, in your case the ending of the window caption is "Extern bureaublad" which is definitetly not "op Samsung monitor", therefore there is no match.

Now I get it! It refers to the string and in this case the string is the window caption. It is not a begin mark and end mark of my regular expression.

I have also found on one of the links you provided that the . (period) in .+ means any character(s) in that position. I think I am starting to get it!  :)
