Topic: «AWM 8.13+ causing lag/interference with mouse cursor , AWM 8.13 and later cause mouse cursor to lag during movement » on forum: Technical Support   Views: 35078

After putting it off for many years, I just purchased a new laptop. It is an Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-52, which a nice budget gaming laptop. I made sure to install all Windows 10 updates. The version on the laptop was 1809 and Windows did not offer to install 1903. While installing and setting up my most used apps, I discovered an issue with Active Window Manager that I never had on my old laptop. I installed the latest version of AWM (8.14.1) and once it started, I noticed that while moving the trackpad/mouse cursor across the screen, it would lag or pause and then suddenly jump to the correct new location. This lag occurred frequently and was quite maddening. There is no way I could use my laptop like this.

Following is a list of things I tried.
1. Installed AWM 8.14.1. Cursor lag.
2. Exported AWM settings from old laptop and Imported into AWM on new laptop. Cursor lag.
3. Exited AWM. NO cursor lag.
4. Used the Acer software to perform a Windows 10 restore to completely wipe the existing copy of Windows 10 and reinstall it as new. I did this because I wanted to set up my user account differently, so it was not because of the AWM issue. However, it was a good opportunity to start with a fresh copy of Windows 10 to determine what might be causing the cursor lag issue. The version of Windows installed was 1809 and I made sure to install all available updates. Again, Windows did not offer to install 1903. However, while setting up OneDrive, I was prompted to upgrade to 1903, which I did. This is the version of Windows on my old laptop.
5. Installed AWM 8.14.1. Cursor lag.
6. Paused AWM. Cursor lag. (Pausing had no affect on the lag.)
7. Exited AWM. NO cursor lag.
8. Uninstalled AWM 8.14.1.
9. Installed AWM 8.12.2. NO cursor lag!
10. Imported settings from old laptop. NO cursor lag.
11. Installed AWM 8.14.1 over 8.12.2. Cursor lag.
12. Installed AWM 8.12.2 over 8.14.1. NO cursor lag.
13. Installed AWM 8.13.3 over 8.12.2. Cursor lag.
14. Installed AWM 8.12.2 over 8.13.3. NO cursor lag.
15. Installed AWM 8.13.0 over 8.12.2. Cursor lag.
16. Installed AWM 8.12.2 over 8.13.0. NO cursor lag.
17. Allowed AWM 8.12.2 to auto-update to 8.14.1. Cursor lag.
18. Installed AWM 8.12.2 over 8.14.1. NO cursor lag. (Disabled auto-update.)

It would seem that something was introduced in AWM 8.13.0 that does not agree with my new laptop. It does not appear to matter which version of Windows 10 I use (1809 or 1903). I currently have Windows 10 Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.418). Pausing AWM does not make the cursor lag go away. The lag seems to occur on a regular interval as though an event or task is being processed. A fresh install with no changes to the default settings will cause the cursor lag issue with any version of AWM 8.13.0 or later.

AWM is one of my most important apps, so I really want to help you figure out what is causing this issue. Please let me know how I can help so I am not stuck on version 8.12.2 forever.

Could you install the latest version again, disable the "Bind the layout to the desktop geometry" option and see whether the problem persists (AWM configuration module > Layout and Snap > Windows Layout > Bind the layout to the desktop geometry)?

If the problem still persists, could you open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc combination), reproduce the issue and see what processes have the highest values of the CPU and Memory parameters (in Windows 10 - the Details tab) when the delays happen and what common CPU and memory consumption values in the system are. Let us know the results.

Also, please provide your laptop specifications – the CPU and graphics card models, RAM size?

Could you also try to disable the following mouse-oriented options: AWM configuration module > Mouse > Drag and Scroll (all options), Multiple Monitors (Tight Monitor Boundaries and Wrap the Desktop). Also AWM configuration module > Multiple Monitors > Screen Saver > Save Idle Screens > Start automatically. Apply the changes and see whether the problem still persists. Let us know the results.

The new laptop that is experiencing the issue is an Acer Predator Helios 300, Model PH315-52-78VL'

After installing 8.14.1, under Layout and Snap > Windows Layout, I disabled "Bind the layout to the desktop geometry" and the cursor lag went away. That seems to be the cause, as you suspected. With that disabled, I am experiencing no problems.

Now that we know which option is unhappy with my new laptop, is there something I can do to help you track down what is unique about the laptop that causes the issue?

Are you running any mouse software like Logitech SetPoint? Could you provide us the name and version.

What security sofwtare you're running (name, version)?

What is the version of graphics card driver?

Bogdan, this is what I have learned.

1. With the option enabled, I did not notice an obvious difference in general proces/task CPU or Memory usage. However, at the moment the lag occurred, I did notice the System process popping to the top of the list with 3-5% CPU usage and then going away. This was consistent. Each time I experienced the lag, the System process was the top process when sorted by CPU usage. Checking the System process is actually ntoskrnl.exe, the NT OS kernal. This makes me believe that the issue may be driver related. But which driver?

2. I restarted the PC in Safe Mode and enabled the option, but did not experience any lag. This seems to also indicate a driver as the culprit.

3. I restarted the PC in Safe Mode with Networking and enabled the option, but did not experience any lag. It would seem that this mode allows networking via the Ethernet port, but does not enable the Wi-Fi radio. I am not sure that this tells us anything about the issue.

4. I restarted the PC in Low Resolution Mode and enabled the option, and the lag did occur. I'm not sure that this tells us anything.

5. No third-party (e.g. Logitech) pointer software has been installed. In fact, I have not even connected a mouse to this laptop at this point.

6. The laptop shipped with Norton Security Ultra. My old laptop has Norton Security Premium installed. I upgraded this new laptop to Norton Security Premium and then converted it to Norton 360. The cursor lag issue persisted throughout.

7. The NVIDIA driver is the latest available, 441.08. This laptop apparently has NVIDIA Optimus graphics. The Intel UHD Graphics 630 is used by default and the dedicated GPU is used when needed by an app or game. When I have tested and observed the cursor lag issue, the dedicated NVIDIA GPU (GeForce GTX 1660 Ti) is Inactive. I went into the Intel Graphics Control Panel and the NVIDIA Control Panel and saved the System Info. I do not see a way to attached files to this post, so I have included the information below in CODE segments.
